True to You

about

This is the first song I ever wrote with a full set of lyrics when I was 17.

I had my first girlfriend for 3 months and I wrote this song for her.

Our first time hanging out was with her friends going laser tag. While we were in the parking lot, some dudes drove by and threw an ice cream cone at my face. The icecream was dripping down my hair, and my soon to be girlfriend cleaned up my hair and assured me I look great (she was sweet).

Our first date was going bowling. As we were leaving the bowling alley we looked at the stars and talked about how beautiful the night is. After a moment of silence, she asked me "Micah, will you go out with me?"

Wow. She's asking the question. I have to make a decision. She's watching me closely, waiting for a response. I hate doing decisions on the spot and I really don't want to hurt her feelings. My heart is in my throat.

I try to buy some time and say "Could you repeat the question please?"

She says "Will you go out with me? As in, be my boyfriend?"

Oh boy. It's happening.

I lost 10 pounds from stress and not knowing how to be a boyfriend or do boyfriend things. Her friends asking me why I haven't kissed her yet after 3 months of being together (I barely understood the mechanics of hugging the opposite gender).

I couldn't concentrate on anything, my grades started dropping, felt too sick to eat breakfast and couldn't sleep easily. After the first week of being together, I was already writing a 6 page break up note.

We never even held hands.

lyrics

these steps that lead us down
will surely bring us up
out of the ground
we've always been stuck
we'll find a wonderland
out of this frozen land
we've got to get out of this frozen land

And I'll say that I love you
when you want me to
I may try and hide from you
when I don't know what to do

these steps keep bringing us down
further in the ground
I can't find my way out
don't know the way around
now the air is getting thick
but the light is shining through
all the friends you thought you had
they were never true to you

And I'll say that I love you
when you want me to
I may try and hide from you
when I don't know what to do

where's the light at the end of the tunnel
that you told me about?
It's just one tunnel after another
and we're going down
